Who’s Deciding Your Flooring Future?

Who’s Deciding Your Flooring Future?

In our stores, I’ve seen a trend that worries me. With the state of the economy, people are coming in with one consideration in mind: PRICE. They’ve been shopping around town and seen killer deals on installation. It sounds like such a bargain, they can’t be persuaded to look beyond the price tag. Often, this is a huge mistake.

How much does low cost, cost you?

Let me tell you my concerns:

Carpet, carpet, carpet.
These installation deals are usually on carpet only. That makes sense, because it is much easier to lay carpet than it is hardwood, stone or tile. At the same time, carpet does not work for every space and every lifestyle.

But not all carpet.
Most carpet deals are only on certain brands and specific styles. Basically, the big boys are partnering up and deciding what they want us to buy. The products they want to move are the ones that get featured. It’s in their best interest, but is it in yours?

And is the “deal” a “value?”
Are you getting the bottom line price? If the installation cost is extra low, but the carpet is too expensive for it’s quality level, that “great deal” comes out a wash.

These pseudo deals are affecting the way customers are buying. I’m convinced that the decisions we’re making in the short term are going to come back and give us a big bite in the tush a few years from now. Will that inferior carpet still be looking good? Doubt it. Particularly if it wasn’t the right choice for the space. And what if you decide to sell your house? Hardwoods could have added value to the home.

For clarification, I love carpet. I sell it every day and I have it in my own home. I just don’t want you to be bullied into thinking it’s your only option.
