Are Sisal Rugs right for you?

Are Sisal Rugs right for you?

Sisal…you just might love it!  It’s neutral, it’s timeless it’s Sisal.

Pick up any decorating magazine and 9 times out of 10 you’ll see a room adorned with at least one sisal area rug.  Why you ask? It is because a sisal rug is so versatile.  The natural color palettes are a great back drop to a décor needing just that special touch.

I checked in with Elsa Holaday, Designer and Area Rug Specialist, asking her to give us just a few pointers on what to consider before purchasing one of these timeless neutral beauties for your home.

  • Sisal is a natural fiber made from agave cactus plant.
  • Sisal is stronger and more durable than coir or jute.
  • Sisal rugs are not recommended for kitchen or bath areas because they can absorb moisture, causing them to expand and contract.
  • They are not recommended for stairs because sisal may become a slip hazard.
  • If you like to sit on the floor, check out a sisal-wool blend to make your natural fiber cozier and softer.
  • Vacuuming is the best cleaning method for all natural fiber.  Never steam clean or use wet shampoo equipment due to moisture absorption.  Dry cleaning powder is recommended for spot removal.
  • If you want a natural, serene setting install sisal wall-to-wall.
  • Make a sisal rug using a binding that matches or select a fabric such as linen, chenille, or leather to bind.
  • Sisal can be cut into many different shapes to contour your room.
  • Sisal is a hardwearing, anti-static, and very strong fiber.

Elsa Holaday’s last piece of important advice is to keep in mind that pets truly love the feel and smell of natural fiber.  So if you have a new puppy, it may not be the best fiber of choice.
